I am trying to install a program that will update data files of an existing installed program. I can install the program to be updated without any problem and it runs fine. However, when I try to install another program, new install msi etc, the second installation gets a error during the install but there is no error message or number, just a big red X and the word error, nothing to give a clue what it doesn't like.
Any ideas how I can find out what the install doesn't like?
I can uninstall the first program and then the second one installs without a error.
Thanks
Ray

Hi Ray,
I really think that there is a problem with the way you are using to process your needs. What I am saying is that probably, you can have much more choises in using patch tecnique to handle your specific request.
Have you given a look at the guide under "patching" topic? (press F1 in IA IDE)
Regards

Re: install stops with no error message
Thanks Francesco, but I need to install another program and the new program knows nothing about the existing program. It gets installed in a new folder, has its own set of files and doesn't need the "other" program to run. When the new programs runs it can interface with the "existing" program. Not a "patch" concept.

Hi Ray,
please sorry, but probably I missed your objective.
you're saying that, the two setup projects installs two completely different aplications, with different product codes and Upgrades Product with different Product Code, but only shares a same folder for data?
Let me know.

Re: install stops with no error message
yes two product codes, two installs. I can uninstall the "first program" and the the second installs and I can reinstall the first program with the second program installed. Its just when the first program is installed that I cannot install the second.
First program product code:
{B8447156-6311-43E9-B3B8-DDB4DDC07EBD}
First program revision code:
{EDBF362E-B1E6-45F4-8133-1FA7C9116E47}
Second program product code:
{748C5F9E-B630-4CD1-B8CC-5F3F4EDF05DC}
Second program revision code:
{D2AB90CC-C30A-42C6-941F-F7C283AEE8C2}
I have rebooted the computer which is runing XP with sp3
Sure don't know how the second program install knows about the first program.
Thanks

Re: install stops with no error message
Hi Ray,
your Products ID are fine and it is correct in this way. By now leave the revision codes and check what id value do you have, in both your projects, for "Upgrades Product with Product Code". To verify it, from the IA IDE project menu, select the button "projects Settings" (you can find it in the top menu ribbon). Once the project settings dialog is active, check the value for "Upgrades Product with Product Code" in the project root .
I have the suspect that it is the same in both projects.
Leyt me know.

Re: install stops with no error message
You were correct Francesco, the "Upgrades Product with Product Code" were the same in both products. Thanks for the help, but it would be nice if InstallAware would produce a better error message.

Hi Ray,
I am happy that you solved!
Regarding your note, I think that your error has not reproduced well, probably because a missed resource string in your install.
Could happens sometimes that your installation strings are not full in sync with the your last changes.
