Reboot and resume setup error

Post by gonpla »

Hello,
I am using Install Aware 12.
Clicking Update application appears Download.
I see that is stored in "C:\Documents & Settings\User\Configuración local\Temp\mia1\filename.exe"
Start the installation of new pre-requisites and installing the Framework 4 Client asked to restart. Before pressing Restart, I see the folder "mia1" has disappeared from the Temp directory and see the Windows registry:
c:\docume~1\usuario\config~1\temp\mia1\iclmsv~1.exe REBOOTCOMPUTER=FALSE RUNAPP=FALSE REBOOTNOW=CANCEL /m="C:\DOCUME~1\Usuario\CONFIG~1\Temp\mia1\ICLMSV~1.EXE" /k=""

When you restart an error message appears saying the file is not to continue the installation. Attach capture.

Is there any way to force the installer to not delete temporary files?

Thank you.

Dear User,

just to verify that I have not missed anything, your installation restarts again after reboot?
If true, you are saying that your installation it is not able to find that file?

Let me now.

is it the only file that after restart, your installation do not find?
do you have other files, as runtimes, that your installation uses?
If true, ca you check if those other files, are available on your local temp path?

When I do a clean installation the computer reboots and continues the installation without problems. But when I have a version and Pulse Start/Products/Update and upgrade my software to a new version, when I accept to restart the computer it deletes temporary files, so when windows restart again he can not continue the installation because he doesnt find the files required.

Thanks.

Can you check if you have selected the option that forces setup resources to be cached and not removed after setup completation?
To do this, under DESIGN VIEW, BUILD SETTINGS check the control:

Always Cache Setup Sources (enables easy patching)

This three-state check-box lets you control setup source caching. When the box is filled, the default source caching option (as described above for each build type) is in effect. When cleared, setup sources are never cached. When checked, setup sources are always cached.

By the way, the above check works only if start from now on (as distributing with a new complete setup package). Press F1 in IDE for more info.

Let me know.

Hello,
I am attaching a screenshot with my setup.
I tell you in detail our problem:
We have software that has some requirements. When you install one of them it asks restarting your computer, specifically Client Framework 4. This works fine with a clean install.
However, when we do a software update and install the Framework 4 Client, it asks restart and does not restart. This is a recognized bug? We do something wrong in the process?
Thank you.

For what seems to understand from your informations, I do not find there is an error in your procedure and at the moment we were not reported similar problems.

But anyway the problem should be somewhere and I need to investigate on it, in order to better elaborate the your issue.
So I am asking you, if you can realiaze a very simple project that reproduces your behaviour.

In this case you should prepare two project, one for the first clean install then the second one, to check the problem reported during upgrading.
These simple projects can merely just install the net framework prerequisites and a simple file. But important you must test that those test projects reproduces exactly your problem.

When you ready send to me as attachment in this topic.

Hello,
It seems perfect, however I mention several things if you are helpful.
- The software version is made with InstallAware 8 and the second with InstallAware 12.
- When running the update from the Start menu, appears a window where the update comes out and click to Download. Then click Install to start installation. We now have the installation window and the window where we have to Download and Install pressed. I tried to kill the window (from the task manager) before prompted to restart the installation and now everything has gone well. My suspicion is that the two windows are accessing temporary files.

I will do two tests:
1) create me two new installers like you said, both with InstallAware 12.
2) create me two new installers, the first with InstallAware 8 and the second with InstallAware 12.

If I can reproduce the error you sent it as an attachment.

In addition to this error I wanted to ask for another. For a clean installation, which does work, restarting the installation continues but no desktop icons appear and the start bar. It's all blocked. When installation is finished or you click Cancel during the installation appears everything. What is this?

Thank you very much.

Ok, when you ready and you can reproduce your problem with those test projects, I will have a look.

Regarding the icons blocked, that's could happen when the system it is still loading some states and infos during a setup.

I also suggest to you to have a look at Installware help docs about the argument and you could also test "Reboot and Resume" instead.

"Reboot and Login"
Since this command writes to the Run registry key, the installation will restart after the Windows shell and other startup programs have been loaded. Security settings on Windows Vista or newer operating systems may prevent setup from automatically restarting without manual user approval. If this is a concern, use Reboot and Resume instead.

Press F in the IDE for help.

Hello, I commented what I have done:
I created two new setups:
1) Test1_1_0_0
It has a single file.
It has no requirements.
It has set the update server, so that when you click "Start/Test1/Update" find the update. I uploaded "Test1_1_0_1 to that server to work.

2) Test1_1_0_1
It has a single file.
It has one requirement: Microsoft Framework 4 client x86 and x64. I modified the script to install one or the other depending on the architecture of the computer.
I modified the script to install Microsoft Framework 4 client, adding: "Set variable DOTNET40CLIENT_RESULT_x86 to REBOOT" before "if Variable EQUALS DOTNET40CLIENT_RESULT_x86 REBOOT". I do this because Windows 7 was the problem of not asking me to reboot and when install the following requirement (Crystal Reports for. NET Framework 4) was error. This would be another bug I do not understand why Windows 7 does not ask for restart, when there are other requirements that depend on it. So, forced to restart and it works fine.

Tests performed:
* Windows XP SP3 (x86):
- I install Test1_1_0_0.
- Click on "Start/Test1/Update".
- Click on "Download" (it download Test1_1_0_1).
- Click on "Install".
- It installs Microsoft Framework 4 Client and requests reboot. By agreeing to close the installation window and the Update window.
* Does nothing, do not restart the computer.

* Windows 7 (x86):
- I install Test1_1_0_0.
- Click on "Start/Test1/Update".
- Click on "Download" (it desacarga Test1_1_0_1).
- Click on "Install".
- It installs Microsoft Framework 4 Client and requests reboot. By accepting, you restart the computer correctly.
* When you start the system again, does not continue the installation.
I am attaching a. ZIP where you have the two projects as well as binaries. I leave on the server update file if you want to do the same tests I've done.

Could you tell me if you can look at it soon? We have to get the new version of our software and urges us quite

Thank you very much.

Dear User,

the problem you found about the failed restart of your installation, it is caused by the installation path used for saving the setup needed for your upgrade.

Your setup upgrade application once downloaded, it is stored in the dafault current user temporary directory and this will be not anymore available after a system restart. So for this reason, because the restart it is executed by pointing to this path, it fails.

In fact, if instead of downloading the update application you run the same locally with a a copy of it, it works fine.

Also have a look at the pre-defined variable "COPYWEBLOCK". Using it you can easly store your downloaded components to other path

See help docs about Pre-Defined Variables - Press F1 in IA IDE.
COPYWEBLOCK: This variable has effect only when a web build is being installed. If empty, downloaded web media blocks are processed normally. If non-empty, the installer will copy each downloaded web media block, including the main setup.exe file in case of the pre-defined OFFLINE web media block, to the path specified by this variable. This allows data that is downloaded by setups from the web to be saved in any arbitrary folder for re-use after the original installation has been removed, or for archival purposes.
Hope this helps you.

Dear User,

a correction on previous topic.

Your update it is saved to ....
$SUPPORTDIR$\$UPDATE_NAME$.exe

so replace SUPPORTDIR with something else.
