Problem Installing Microsoft Runtimes on XP SP3

Post by OhadShavit »

1. I'm using IA version 12 - uncompressed distribution (CD/DVD).
2. I marked Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 10.0 and Microsoft .NET Framework 4 at Application Runtimes.
3. On Windows 7 everything is OK.
4. On Windows XP SP3 I'm getting the next error: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 10.0 could not be installed. Please use Windows Update to manually install this update on your system."
5. Yet, i managed to easily download and install: Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86).
6. Then i tried to run installer again and got the following error: "Microsoft .NET Framework Client 4 could not be installed. The system cannot find the file specified. Please use Windows Update to manually install this update on your system." (Note that i didn't explicitly select .NET Framework Client 4 as a dependency).
7. Again downloading and installing work well, and then i can finely install the software by running installer again.
8. What's wrong? Do you have some known issues with XP's runtime prerequisites? Thanks, Ohad.

Dear user,

for my personal experience, I suspect that this problem it is caused by Runtime x86/x64 missmatch with target OS.

So please check that the correct target required runtime it is selected and also that the check-install script for that runtime, it is correct.

Let me know if I'm wrong.

1. First of all, thanks for the super quick response.
2. As far as i know the type of runtimes (x86/x64) you need to install depends on the type of application you want to run on it, and not the type of the hosting operating system. i.e, because my application compiled as win32 application i must install x86 runtimes on either x86 or x64 hosting operating systems. And that exactly what I'm doing!
3. Here is the checking script generated by IA:

Include Script checkvc10_x86
Include Script checkmsi31
Include Script checknet4aip_client_x86
Include Script checknet4aip_x86

4. And here is, what i believe, the installation script of these prerequisites:

[Web Media Block Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime 10.0 (includes ATL and MFC)]
Include Script setupvc10_x86
[Web Media Block Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1]
Include Script setupmsi31
[Web Media Block Microsoft .NET Framework Client 4]
Include Script setupnet4aip_client_x86
[Web Media Block Microsoft .NET Framework 4]
Include Script setupnet4aip_x86

5. Maybe it can give you a hint to the problem: why it is a "Web Media Block"? Shouldn't these installers be combined in installation directory? Or this is just a matter of bad term? And then again it works on Windows 7 both 32 and 64...
6. Thanks, Ohad.

Dear Ohad,

I was just reporting a possible mix, because sometimes I found that due a wrong selection, an unwanted mix can be generated.

But for what I see, it is not your case.

I will try to check it, but I can only test using version 2012 of InstallAware.

I will do it!

Regards.

Hello again,

I made some tests and i found that you can easily reproduce that behavior:
1. Create new project by selecting .Net Setup from Quick Start>Templates.
2. Name the project and select the project directory.
3. In Application Runtimes select MSVC++ 10.0 (.Net Framework 4 an Client 4 is already selected).
4. Build uncompressed release by clicking "CD or DVD" icon on "Project" TAB.
5. Test your installer (be sure to test it on a clean machine where these dependencies are not installed) .

Thanks, Ohad.

Did this ever get resolved? I appear to be experiencing something very similar with the .net 4 installation too
