IA can't run PnPUtil in Win7 64

Post by mwilner »

I need to run at the end of the installation of all files the PnPUtil.exe and it works using the Run command in Win 7 32 bit but fails to work in Win 7 64 bit.
How can I resolve this issue?

Dear Manfred,

are you using x64 version of PnPUtil.exe?

Francesco,
I am calling in either case the PnPutil regardless the version. The App which is located in c:\windows\system32.
When calling the app directly from command line it works.
Thank you,

Dear Manfred,

if calling it from command line works, it must works from IA too.

Are you using any variables that probably are not correctly resolved running on x64 OS?

Thanks, Yes I am using the following call:
Run Program PnPUtil.exe -a "$TARGETDIR$\Kiosk.inf" (WAIT, get result into variable SUCCESS)

TARGETDIR is getting properly resolved when running through with the debugger.

Dear Manfred,

The file "Kiosk.inf", is it installed with your setup?
in your script when do you call the command, after apply install?

Yes the file is installed with the installer and the run command is called at the end of the installation just before exit.
It works fine for Win 7 32 with no change.

Dear Manfred,

can you try to place a dialog box to output $TARGETDIR$ just before the run command?

Dear Manfred,

if you still have problem, please replicate it with a very simple test project and sent it to me.

Hi Francesco,
I do still have the problem in Win 7 64 bit but how can I send you the project?
Also a very simple project will not help as you will have to have the driver that is supposed to get installed with PnPUtil.
Thank you,

Dear Manfred,

Let me think how I can simulate it.

Let me know if you have an alternative solution.

Hi Francesco,
I figured out what the problem is in Win 7 64, you need to elevate the app to Admin because even when using a batch file outside IA I couldn't successfully execute PnPUtil.
So my question now is how do I elevate the app in IA? I know of the Run As command but I don't have an admin name or password that I could elevate it to.
Thank you,

Dear Manfred,

Probably it is a very stupid suggestion, Can you create a customized dialog to ask user to enter User and password?

Hi Francesco,
Thank you for the help so far I will not be able to pop up a dialog asking for the Admin name and password but will have to come up with a different workaround.
It is unfortunate that IA is not elevating any applications that it calls to the same level as it is itself since the installer is starting with Admin priviledges.

Is this restriction on purpose?

Best regards,
Manfred Wilner
