Run Program or Install MSI

Post by dhofferber »

I'm installing both .exe and .msi files as prerequisites. I wanrt them to run silently but show progress. The forums and google searches seem to give conflicting guidance. My plan is to use Run Program for the .exe and Install MSI for the .msi. Is this correct or is there a more preferred option? Thanks.

Dear User,
My plan is to use Run Program for the .exe and Install MSI for the .msi. Is this correct or is there a more preferred option?
That is correct! Using (Un)Install MSI Setup plug-in (included in every InstallAware setup by default using even the minimum setup option) can run any MSI to install it or remove it; and even capture the progress feedback and display it natively inside the InstallAware setup dialogs as if it were its own.

Code: Select all

Example:
Install/Remove MSI Package myfile.msi[ADDLOCAL=ALL] (get result into variable MYRESULT)
Just adding the above code line in your script you have a very easy way of running that file, which doesn't involve ugly/opaque command line methods at all.

For your EXE file instead use RUN PROGRAM command ... but if executed silently (or using the "hide program Window" command option) there will be no progress displayed. It will be exactly as happens when you launch the exe from command line.

Hope this helps you.

:?: The Install MSI isn't running correctly. It needs the IACCEPTSQLLOCALDBLICENSETERMS=YES option. I don't see how to add it to the script.

Just to be clear. My script is: Install/Remove MSI Package $SUPPORTDIR$\SqlLocalDBx86.msi[ADDLOCAL=ALL] (get result into variable LocalDB_Result_x86_x64)

I need to add: the MSI option IACCEPTSQLLOCALDBLICENSETERMS=YES

Where do I put it? This answer should be helpful to many developers.

Dear User,

use the Action String parameter. Type there any extra command option that you require.
For more detailed info search "(Un)Install MSI Setup" in InstallAware documentation (just press F1 in IA ide).

:D I have it working using the Action String and wanted to pass along something I found that may help others. Don't include the /qn option in your Action String. It will return ERROR when run. Not sure why but it may be duplicative when using (Un)Install MSI.

P.S. to forum users. Please take the time to provide a rap up submittal such as this when you have things working. So many times I've read through a thread that is just what I need and the final solution or advice is not there.
