TuneUp Utilities deletes InstallAware installation files

Postby alibaba » Wed Dec 19, 2012 5:37 am

Hi guys,

today i finally discovered why sometimes an uninstallation of IA setups is not possible because the installations files were not found. The reason wjy the files for uninstallation were missing is that TuneUp Utilities just deleted them in "clean up" process. I think this is of cause a bug in this tool and informed the manufacturer to fix this.
But if I took a closer look then I could see that ONLY IA setups are affected. For instance InstallShield setups are not deleted by TuneUp Utiliteis 2013. So my question is now: Doesn't InstallAware setups meet the microsoft recommended practices or is TU just a bit too aggressive?

Dear Alibaba,

I use a different utility tool that pratically does the same work and with it those files are not deleted.
I can only suppose that your tool settings are just a bit too aggressive.

Yes!

I don't use such tools because, as you can see, they destroy more then they improve. But a lot of customers seem to like it - I don't understand why. But in my test I did not change the settings of the program. The IA setup files were deleted by default!

I am not sure if IA saves the chached installations on the right place because all other installations are stored within c:\Windows\Installer\ and are save there. TuneUp does not delete files in c:\Windows\Installer\. Maybe IA should think about changing the chache folder to Windows standard.

Dear Alibaba,

That cache location is reserved by Windows Installer for their own MSI/MSP file cache and it is not a location that setup utilities can just write to (although that may not do any harm either).

Most probably TuneUp Utilities is not doing the job correctly and maybe, you should contact them to let them know they are breaking legitimate setups.
I repeat, for test purpose only I use a different tool. I haven't changed any dafault settings and those folder are not removed.

Anyway, if you want to customize the setup cache location, InstallAware has the built-in pre-defined variable "OVERRIDECACHE" for this.

Regards.

As I wrote in my first post my first action was to inform the developer of TuneUp Utilities about it ;) But until now I have no final statement from them.

If would do a more significant test then just download TU Utlities 2013 (15 day trial) and select clean up Windows and Programs. You will see that it treats IA setups files like "temporary installations" and not like "permanent installation files".

Anyway the hint with the "OVERRIDECACHE" is a good work around, thank you :)

Dear Alibaba,

I full trust your verification :) ... and I know due past experience, that with some software vendors it is not easy to receive a prompt feedback (... and with some ... it is really diffcult just to receive a feedback).
