Getting "another version of setup is already running" error
Getting "another version of setup is already running" error
Hi, I am developing a new InstallAware script for a program using Advantage Database Server in the Client-Server version. When I run the install script it is fine until the end when I get the message "another version of setup is already running" from the ADS setup. I am pretty sure setup is not already running, this has happened on machines that have just started up.
The relevant code in the install script is:
Install Files C:\ASource\AV304\CD Master (10.x) V304\Advantage Server\Advantage Database Server for Windows v10.10.msi to $TARGETDIR$\Program

Hi Francesco
That code launches the Advantage Boot Strap Executable. I am pretty sure it runs Advantage Database Server for Windows v10.10.msi.
Thanks,
Martin

Hi Francesco
I just tried running amsetup.exe manually after installing the application, and it works! That might be the solution, to just change our installation instructions to manual install of ADS, though it would look a bit "low tech".
Thanks,
Martin

Dear Martin,
...with my previous post I meant to place that command just after the Apply Install command in your main script ... if you do it, I suppose it should work fine.
Let me know.

Re: Getting "another version of setup is already running" er
Hi Francesco
Oh, sorry about the misunderstanding. I have now moved that command (Run Program $TARGETDIR$\Program\amsetup.exe) to just after the Apply Install command in my main script. Now at the end of the installation I get a message box about Windows Installer and all the options to msiexec, followed by a message that "Advantage Database Server for Windows Setup has failed."
If I could get rid of all the error messages and just ask the users to install Advantage manually, that would be good. But I tried removing (Run Program $TARGETDIR$\Program\amsetup.exe) and I still got the messages above. It seems that the setup is running somewhere else, but I have searched through the scripts and cannot find where.
Thanks
Martin

Re: Getting "another version of setup is already running" er
Dear Martin,
I'm sure that you can run that installer without any problem within your project script (I have done the same several times with my personal projects) ... but probably you are not doing it correctly. More precisely, I suppose that you are not storing that file correctly ( ... or any other required file) and conseguently, it fails because not available.
Why do you not store all the files required to run the "amsetup.exe" under Support files (temporary target location)?
Are you sure that all the files required by the setup package are effectively available on target machine when you run the command;
"Run Program $TARGETDIR$\Program\amsetup.exe (WAIT)"?
Regarding the other problem that you seems to have because the setup seems to be still running, probably the error returned by MSIEXEC leaves the engine process open. I may suggest you to try to reeboot your target machine or to manually stop via TASK MANAGER (CTRL+ALT+DEL), any windows installer engine process you find running.
Let me know.

Re: Getting "another version of setup is already running" er
Hi Francesco
Sorry for the delay in replying, I have been out of the office for several days.
I have been told in another forum that "You can only run one MSI install at a time. If InstallAware is already running an MSI install that would explain this problem when running the Advantage Server Install (amsetup.exe)."
I have found that if I let my project script install all the necessary files and then finish, after this I can run the Advantage Server Install manually and it works. So I will probably do that and include instructions in the guide to run Advantage Server Install manually.
There is one other thing, although I have removed the script command to run amsetup.exe, I am still getting a message box at the end of the script with the title "Windows Installer" and msiexec /option underneath, with a list of all the options. Could you advise me on how to avoid getting this message?
Thanks

Re: Getting "another version of setup is already running" er
Dear Martin,
that's the reason why I told you with one of my previous post, to place the command;
"Run Program $TARGETDIR$\Program\amsetup.exe (WAIT)" just after the InstallAware "Apply Install" call.
I repeat, if you call this setup package after the "Apply Install" command, It must work fine.
Then regarding your other issue where you are still getting the Windows Installer message box, I can only suppose that a call who tries to execute the msiexec is still left within your code.
Regards.

Re: Getting "another version of setup is already running" er
Hi Francesco
I have put that command "Run Program $TARGETDIR$\Program\amsetup.exe" just after the "Apply Install" command, and I don't get the error "another version of setup is already running", which is a step forward. But I still get a message box titled Windows Installer with all the options to msiexec, followed by a message that "Advantage Database Server for Windows Setup has failed", which refers to amsetup.exe. Also I do not see any of the dialogues that Advantage Database Server for Windows Setup would display. I have searched and I cannot find any other calls to msiexec.
When I run amsetup.exe manually after all the supporting files have been installed, it works fine.
I am wondering whether an upgrade of InstallAware would help, I am using InstallAware Studio 2012.
Martin
PS I just realised I haven't yet taken up your suggestion to 'store all the files required to run the "amsetup.exe" under Support files (temporary target location)?' I was just looking at the Install Files options, would it be in "Target Folder" that I did this?

Dear Martin,
Could you please send to me privately the "amsetup.exe " package that you are trying to install?
Alternatively, even a link where I can download it, it is fine.
Please use; [email protected]
