Oracle client and network components not found

Post by ekekakos »

Hello, I am testing the InstallAware and until now I found it excellent. I am using VB.NET and making programs which are connected to our Oracle database. I try to install one in a PC and when I tried to connect to the database I received the following error:
Oracle client and networking components were not foundThese componetnts are supplied by the Oracle Coorparation andare part of the Oracle version 7.3.3 and later. This program will not run until the installation of these.
I have an installation file but my question is if I can do it automatically through a pre check of the InstallAware.

Thanks in advance

I have installed my application in a pc without the client and when I run the program and I am trying to connect to the oracle db in order to run a script I have the above message. I know that the oracle client is missing but how I can do a preriquisite in InstallAware like Framework2 or Windows Installer etc. Namely when I m installing my aplication through InstallAware, this will detect if the oracle client is missing and if yes install it from the cd.

Thanks

Unfortunately, there is not a pre-built Oracle runtime provided with InstallAware. However, you can read this whitepaper:

http://www.installaware.com/installawar ... s_view.pdf

for a description of the simple process to create your own. Additionally, InstallAware supports Oracle .Net which lets you connect to Oracle servers without requiring any client software on the machine!

So just choose the most versatile option for yourself...

Hi Michael,

regarding your statement:

InstallAware supports Oracle .Net which lets you connect to Oracle servers without requiring any client software on the machine!

Would you be ale to clarify?

From my understanding, using the Microsoft or Oracle .Net driver requires the Oracle network component installed on the machine (maybe the easiest way to get this network component installed is to install Oracle client is installed).

Maybe Installaware written or licensed a library for connecting on the Oracle network?

Do I remember correctly that InstallAware uses the OLE-DB .NET provider? Here's a link describing the requirements for OLE-DB to connect to Oracle http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q244661/

I'm considering using InstallAware for our product installer (including running oracle scripts), so understanding the limitations on this is important to how we go on this.

Thanks!

The Oracle Database plug-in included with IA is capable of connect to an Oracle database without any other client software being installed in the user's computer. You just need the plug-in included in your project and that will do it.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the fast reply.

I was able to connect to SQL Server (using the installed sample in the "Samples/SQLServer Connection" directory) via the InstallAware installer, but have not been successful with Oracle. The error I am getting in a messagebox is:

"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2728."

Any thoughts on what might be the issue?

Do you have a sample project for connecting to Oracle?

Thanks!

That would be great. It will help us with our evaluation of Installaware.

How can I detect if either Oracle Client or ODAC are present in the end-user machine?

Hi Tiago,

You will need to extract the install GUID from an Oracle Client's install, then write a script to check for the existance of this GUID being registered with the MSI engine.

For more information, have a look at the Crystal Reports or any of the other runtimes.

You will need to open the MSI using the ORCA tool from Microsoft, and you should fine the product GUID there.

Good luck :)

Hmmm... great! I'll try to do that!

But what if I'm installing another application installer which doesn't use the MSI format?

Is there any other alternative?

Thank you, Neillans!
