windows 98 problem

Post by zipzap »

We are testing the install program. We have a older Dell OptiPlex Pentium 133MHz with 32Megs RAM.

With a fresh install of Windows 98, if we try the install, it will crash every time. The crash occurs before the setup UI is shown. If we try /l=c:\\log.txt, no log file is created.

The crash says:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown."
If you select "detail" it says:
"Setup caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown>." It lists the address as 0000:00000000. All the registers are zero too.

Our install has not min OS or Memory. It does have a min. resolution of 800x600. The only module it installs is "Windows Installer 2.0".

We can run our old InstallShield 6.0 install. We can also run the "MSI 2.0" setup. We downloaded it directly from Microsoft.

Any ideas what might be going on?

Might be some kind of rouge software or setting on the Win98 machine. We do our testing on clean machines here at InstallAware, and our setups run even on Win95.
