SQLExpress - command line - more thoughts

Postby K1pp3r » Wed Oct 24, 2007 7:51 am

Hi

Have now done more investigation. This problem is down to permissions but..... the plugin creates the instance, but the SQLExpress install does not create the instance data directory, so when I was copying my data files to an instance data directory (which didn't exist, but IA created for me), the correct permissions were not applied, if I copy my data files to the MSSQL.1 data directory all is fine (NETWORK SERVICE) has the correct permissions on this directory. Copying files to the MSSQL.1 data directory would work but is not a perfect solution in that MSSQL.2, MSSQL.3 etc may exist.

The question therefore is - why isn't the install creating the instance data directory. Is this an IA problem or something that needs looking at with SQLExpress, either way suggestions would be helpful. I don't think creating the instance directory and applying the permissions would be do-able in that the generated user for NETWORK SERVICE is obscure to say the least.

Help !!!

Hi

Well....... solved the problem by utilising something I dismissed as too obscure. Installed my data files in a sub directory of the target directory, created a variable concatenated from "SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$" + machine name + "$" + SQLServer instance name this equates to the generated SQL Server user, applied the relevant permissions to the directory and all is fine no more read only !!

Would still be interesting to find out what is happening with the command line for SQL Express - is IA not passing the extra parameters or is SQL Express ignoring them, and why does SQL Express not create the instance data directory.

Back to work - at last !!!
