Why does a patch require the original install source on the target machine?

Because patches are incremental - they contain only the latest changes to your files, and not the whole files. In the Project Options window, there is an Include whole files only option which will probably sidestep this issue, but then why make patches - you end up with a full sized setup anyways.

Also read the Patching topic in the online help for how patch source resolution occurs - if you are patching web builds, for instance, this is automatic.
