InstallAware 7 updates

Post by bramsmulders »

Hi,

Recently I have moved my installaware installation from my own development machine to our new build machine, in order to perform automatic builds. I did a fresh IA7 studio install on this build machine.

I keep receiving update notifications to update to IA9. However, I tried to install this update, but this 'update' removes my IA7 completely and replaces it with a IA9 trial version.

I would like to install all updates on my IA7 which fit our license, but only the IA9 trial update is offered.

How can I still install the latest IA7 updates without the need of a new license? Or can I validate IA9 with my IA7 key?

Thanks in advance!

I guess this did the trick. I tried our InstallAware 7 license tool on the IA9 update, keeping my fingers crossed. It works! IA9 is now validated.

Surprisingly, I still receive the IA7 splash screen on startup.

What you're doing won't work, and is also a violation of your EULA. You should use the same version license as the version you purchased, otherwise you will get tons of strange errors due to product misconfiguration. Please do not post these asking for help! You are running a v7 product on top of a v9 core, which will produce lots of strange issues.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your response. Can you (or anyone) give me a hint on how to get updates for IA7 without violating the EULA?

It seems a bit of an agressive marketing technique to push an IA9 trial update on top of a validated IA7 installation. I guess it would be appropriate to offer IA7 updates only in this case. Now I'm stuck with a broken product...

I quote from the update description for InstallAware 7 (emphasis mine):
This is a recommended update for all InstallAware users. In addition to resolving issues reported for this version, this update provides enhancements to product features taken from top user requests.

Note: This major new upgrade requires a current license for InstallAware 9.
As for your second question, I quote from your license delivery email:
IMPORTANT! Always backup your trial version installer, as well as your activation file, in a safe location. InstallAware does not keep old version trial downloads or activation files; therefore once your Customer Account expires, you will not be able to re-install your product unless you have previously made backups.

Hi Michael,

Once again thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the update description you quoted was only visible to me partly. The installer showed my a message cut off to this:
This is a recommended update for all InstallAware users. In addition to resolving issues reported for this version, this update provides enhancements to product features taken from top user requests.

Note: This major new upgrade requires a cu
...without the possibility to scroll down. I however understand and accept that I cannot benefit from the new IA9 release with just an IA7 license. I will remove the IA9 installation.

InstallAware does not keep old version trial downloads or activation files; therefore once your Customer Account expires, you will not be able to re-install your product unless you have previously made backups.
I do have those backup up. I will therefore be able to restore my IA7 installation. Unfortunately, I will not be able to benefit from any bug fixes released after the installer we downloaded, since the IA updater does not offer these.

I am facing some occasional build failures with the command line tool miabuild.exe (not being able to find ulteriordependent.exe) and I was hoping that a bugfix release might have solved those.

I did indeed back up my IA7 installation files and license keys.

I don't want to reinvest thousands of dollars for an upgrade just to use what I own.

However when trying to install IA7 I get a retry extraction error... " Extraction of installation data downloaded from the web has failed. What would you like to do?" -
Choice 1 download a fresh copy of installation data.
choice 2 try to extract the existing download data again.

Either choice results in the same message appearing again. Cancel is the only button which seems to do anything... It prevents me from installing.

I would expect Installaware to be able to install above all other products !

It appears you did NOT backup your setup files, if the installer is trying to download them online.
