How to override SQL Express 2005 'sa' password

Post by rodolfoj »

Hi IA People,

I am doing a package where I have to install SQL EXPRESS 2005 with Mgmt. Studio. So far, I have completed this and I have my own 'sa' password.

My next task is:
IF SQL EXPRESS IS ALREADY INSTALLED, CAN I REPLACE THE 'SA' PASSWORD ACCOUNT WITH MY OWN PASSWORD.

Is this possible? If not, please advice me what best to do to have an 'SA' account with my specific password.

NOTE: Our application has a buil-in (hard-coded) 'SA' password, that's the reason why we need to have an 'SA' user with the specific password.

Thank you.

Hi, rodolfoj!

As far as I know there's no easy solution to change 'sa' password (if not even possible). If it was, it would brake security system of SQL server, i guess.
You can setup a new instance of SQL server with your own 'sa' password.

But I would advice to create a Login with admin rights and to use that login account inside your application. You can hardcode it's password (though it's not a best practice). That would be a better solution, imo. Hard coding 'sa' password can put at risk your entire security of Database System.

Leave 'sa' user for admins, use your own login with granted admin rights to accommodate your needs.

Hope this helps.
