Unless I 'run as admin' I get a 'directory name is invalid'

Post by dunion »

I also get it when I run the .exe rather than the .msi. I've checked the required UAC elevation, so I was expecting that (this works on 32 bit machines) on the x64 machines that it would prompt me for a user name/password on a non-admin account, or it would just work after it prompts me for permission to run again with the orange box (which it does), but that fails. If I explicitly, for example, 'run as admin' or open a command window in admin mode and run msiexec, then it runs OK.

This is set to require x64, Require UAC Elevation on Vista.

Run from command line works, not from icon

If I run from a command line opened from 'run as admin' all works, double clicking the 'icon' fails with this error still. I have tried our custom Icon and an icon from one of the MS VS2008 icon files, same result. Have requires UAC, Elevation, x64. If run from command line all works to completion.

Additional Info: UAC Related

If I disable UAC the problem goes away.
One possible problem is if this is trying to create some temporary file, the app may have UAC elevation but the temp file may not and the directory may not be writeable with UAC. Some work-arounds (other than disabling UAC) may be to have some control of which directory temp files are written to... Scriptable?
