Quick question: can IA9 R2 be installed side-by-side with IA9?

No - the plug-ins for each version are shared so side by side installation is not supported (and is unnecessary since we keep making InstallAware better and better 
)
You can still install in a VM and do your tests there if there is some concern regarding the upgrade.
