SQL Express 2008 R2, 64 bit runtime install failes

Post by deangereaux »

I’m running into problem installing the SQL Express 2008 R2 x64 bit runtime on a 64bit Win7 machine (Enterprise) and a 64 bit Windows Server 2008 R2 system. Both systems fail with the same error: “The operating system returned error 38(Reached the end of the file.) to SQL Server during a read at offset
0000000000000000 in file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Template Data\MSDBData.mdf'.” (see attached file)

Sure enough when I checked the file size of MSDBData.mdf it is zero bytes in length. To verify that my install script changes we not causing problems, I created a test install that just installed the SQL Express 2008 R2 runtime. I've set the "Administrator privledges" and '64 bit OS.."

I'm using InstallAware 9 R2, Studio.

A couple of things I tried:
1. Installing SQL Express 2008 R2 (64 bit) using Microsoft’s install program works.
2. Installing the SQL Express 2008 SP1 (64 bit) runtime (provided by InstallAware) works.
3. SQL Express 2008 R2 32 bit on 32 bit Win7 works.

Has anyone else run into this error?

Thanks,
Dean

Do any entries to SQL Express appear in the Start menu after the error?

I'm getting an error (on win 2k8 & 7), but it's an MSIcode generated error (since the return value was not 0).

I'll investigate this, but I haven't been able to reproduce the error you mention.

When I get this fixed, I'll report my alterations and see if they have any impact for you.

I didn't set requirements: Admin or 64-bit OS. The 64-bit OS req. may be the difference between what we're seeing.

I did produce the error originally posted by trying to install the setup from command line. The cause of this is not clear, especially since the error is produced by running:

setup.exe /ACTION=Install

I'm going to check to see if there's a newer installer that will succeed.

Hi Andy -

In response to your question posted on Sept 8th:
"Do any entries to SQL Express appear in the Start menu after the error?"
No. No SQL entires in the start menu.

As far as requrements, I've setup my install to require admin privileges and 64bit install. I'm using the x64 SQL Express 2008R2 install.

Thanks,
Dean

Hi,

Sometimes I'm having (I mean customers) similar problems as well, and the most iritating thing is just a short message without any reasonable explanation.
However, you can find details in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log. This may help you to determine what's wrong.

getting the same thing on 64 bit. not sure what's going on... did you get anywhere on this?

i'm going to try and build an installer that just deals with this and see if it fails, but I definitely am getting the same error you're getting.

although I did get the SQL Server 2008 R2 shortcuts in my start menu.

Here's my latest attempt... this sucks... holding up my deployment.

2010-09-19 15:30:48 SQLEngine: : Checking Engine checkpoint 'ConfigureServiceBroker'
2010-09-19 15:30:48 Slp: --SafeSqlCommand: ALTER DATABASE tempdb SET NEW_BROKER ALTER DATABASE msdb SET NEW_BROKER
2010-09-19 15:30:48 Slp: Sco: SqlException: Message:The operating system returned error 38(Reached the end of the file.) to SQL Server during a read at offset 0000000000000000 in file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.TATTOOSTUDIO\MSSQL\Template Data\MSDBData.mdf'. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.
Cannot create a new Service Broker in read-only database "msdb".
ALTER DATABASE statement failed.

Found the problem:

\sqlexpress2008r2bin_x64\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\pfiles\sqlservr\mssql.x\mssql\binn\template\msdbdata.mdf is 0 bytes.

Edit: Replaced the file in the web media block on my server, going to try the install again.

Edit: Yep. That fixed it. IA needs to update that package.

We've uploaded a fixed version of the runtime:
http://www.installaware.com/santacruz/s ... n_x64.7zip

Copy that to your InstallAware/runtimes folder.

Hello, i have exactly the same problem.
SQL 2008 R2 not wants to install on x64 machines. Non the 32 SQL neither the 64 bit runtime. All original Setups from microsoft runs well. I have tested all in a newly installed windows 7 (virtual box).
I tried to load the new runtime, but the link did not work in your post. Couldyou send me a link to the working runtimes for both 32+64 Bit?

Best regards christian
