Get IIS Property in IA 11

Post by lbertoldi »

Hi there, I just installed the new version (build Mooya 6.3.11) hoping that it would solve my problems with IIS (6 and 7).
As far as I understand, it doesn't.
I created a simple project, just to get and display the path of a website. If I check "Use IIS7 processing" it works on Windows 7 but it doesn't in Win 2k3 (I get garbage text), if I don't check it neither of them work.
So I have two questions
1. why implement the "use iis7" behavior at all? I mean, if the setup is running on IIS6 it should query the metabase using IIS6 compliant methods, otherwise it should use IIS7 methods (or whatever). Why put the burden on the setup developer who should check if using IIS6 or 7?
2. most of all, can you tell me what I am doing wrong in the attached sample?
Thanks

Hey,

Thank you for your comment!

The main issue is that Metabase Properties are deprecated in IIS 7. This means that unless a special compatibility package is installed, there are no Metabase properties in IIS 7.
The old Get IIS Property used the Metabase approach and therefore doesn't work on IIS 7. Therefore, we decided to develop a special syntax to access IIS 7 configuration properties using the same dialog and command format as with the previous Get IIS Property command - this is because we didn't want to break the backward compatibility to previous projects.
Furthermore, we added an automatic translation of IIS 6 Metabase Properties to IIS 7 configuration paths to make it even easier.

As for your second question, Windows 2003 ships with IIS 6, therefore you would have to uncheck the "Use IIS 7 processing".

Thanks!

Thanks for your answers.
I did understand that IIS7 check must be checked on systems with IIS7 and it must be cleared on IIS6 systems, I believe it's self explanatory. I also know that IIS6 compatibility is a component I can install on Win 7 or 2k8.
Problem is that the project I attached in my first post does not work on Win 2k3 at all, whether the check is set or not.
How can I get the path of a website on Win 2003 using the Get IIS property?
Thanks

Hey,

The problem with your project is that you didn't check the "Virtual Folder" radiobutton in the Get IIS Property command dialog.
In IIS 6, Path belongs to a Virtual Folder rather than a whole site. Therefore, select "Virtual Folder" in the command dialog (and leave the field empty if you are interested in the root folder) and you should be good to go!

Sorry for the late reply, I was on vacation.
It works!
I still think the IIS7/IIS6 access mode could be addressed on your side, rather than having the developer check for the IIS version.
I had to write this

Code: Select all

Get System Setting Internet Information Server 7 into P_IIS7
if Variable P_IIS7 Equals TRUE
Get IIS 7 Folder Property "Path" into variable PORTALSITEPATH from site #$PORTALSITEINDEX$/
else
Get IIS Folder Property "Path" into variable PORTALSITEPATH from site #$PORTALSITEINDEX$/
end
but since it's working I have very little to complain.
Thanks!

Hi,

We are aware of that. The reason you have to check for the IIS version is so that InstallAware remains backward compatible. Otherwise, old projects will not work in newer IIS versions...

I have to correct myself, it is PARTIALLY working.
Actually, if the path contains %systemdrive% it fails on certain systems (it works on my Win7 and Win 2k3, it fails on Win 2k8 with "network location not found").
I had to use this workaround http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... f=2&t=5833
Can be something related to the fact that Win 2k8 is a 64 bits system?
Thanks again

Hi,

I think this is an OS issue rather than an InstallAware issue. Perhaps try consulting the MSDN forums for Windows 2008.
