Create folder

Post by Valgardur »

I need to create a folder as a target folder directly as (for example) "c:\vgvg" and install various files there. The "create folder" in the help file doesn't give much information.

I suspect I should use $MyLocalAppData$ and set it's location as my folder, but I cannot figure out where to do this, and more importantly, whether it may have any side effects.

Furthermore, when updating or uninstalling my user needs to have the option to keep his files.

Any examples available that will accomplish this?

Hi,

You might want to get that folder location in the Define Setup Globals region. You should be fine if you have the right permissions to do this.

As per your second questions, you can choose "Permanent Files" in the Install Files command dialog, and then remove them manually if the user wants them removed.

Thanks for the reply, but I must admit I am still a bit confused.

How do I "get that folder location in the Define Setup Globals"? I'm not trying to read information from the target machine, I want to use a specific hard coded directory - yes, knowing this is not generally a good idea.

Also what are "permanent files"? There is not mention on this in the help file.

There is a code region (assuming you built your setup from a template) called Define Setup Globals.
In that region, you can define your custom folder:
Set Variable CUSTOMDIR to c:\hard\coded\path
Then, you can us the Install Files command and install to $CUSTOMDIR$

Thanks, but my point was that I cannot edit the scripting text, nor can I paste my text.. whenever I try to enter something I get a dialog with very limited options.

And, what are "permanent files"?

What do you mean by "try to enter something"?

In the Install Files dialog, you can check a box titled "permanent files" - they won't be removed on uninstallation.

Thanks, by "try to enter something" I mean that in the script editor, no matter what key I hit, it only brings up some dialog box. I cannot enter text manually.

And I'm still a bit lost, there is no "permanent files", and no separate Install Files dialog.

The word "permanent" only appears twice in the help, once for registry writing and once for "file bag" plug-in.

I'm using Install Aware Studio 2012, but I cannot find "About Box" or version information.

Are you using the Express edition? This edition does not support MSIcode scripting.

I purchased something called "InstallAware Studio - Upgrade" according to the invoice - which according to "sales" (Jason Strathmore) should be able to handle this.

I cannot find any further information - the "Version" dialog only says:

"Install Aware 2012 for Windows Installer & Native Code & Digital Rights Management & App-V" and then Install Aware 2012 (Build Moooya.9.26.11).

You should be able to edit the Install Files command then.
Are you able to locate the Install Files command in your MSIcode tab?

Thanks for a quick reply - as always... but...

Perhaps I'm missing something obvious, but I'm quite lost.

While in the MSIcode tab I see a script, searching "Install Files" finds 20 or so lines beginning with "Install Files", and I cannot edit them.

And like I said before, the word "permanent" is nowhere visible and hardly exists in the help.

You can find it in the options of the "install Files" command. Just double klick on the InstallFiles line in the MSICode-View.

Thanks, I still don't see how was supposed to figure this out. Why not simply allow straight text editing? And the help / how-to's could definately be more informative...

Anyway, be that as it may, finally getting there...

Still... I need to add 2.300 files from 8 folders with various exentension, I'm not seeing any way to add folders and subfolders with one command, the file open only allows me to select files.

If I understood right, thenI would recommend insert "Install Files" 8 times, each for every folder and select "include subfolders" as you can see in my picture above.

That would be fine if dialog did allow me to select folders, instead of only files.

Is there really no way to edit the script manually?
