Web Updates - How do I Use Them?

Hi,

Is there a beginners walkthrough/guide/tutorial on how to use IA12 patch/update mechansism.

I have looked at the userguide and have a basic idea but can't seem to get it to work at all, so a straight forward tutorial on the default mechanism would be fantastic.
