Transparency in setup.bmp

I would like to use some transparency in my setup.bmp so that I can have a custom shape. Is it possible or does it always have to be rectangular? In the attached image, I would like the white to be transparent. I can do it in .png format, but it seems that the splash has to be a .bmp -

Unfortunately Bitmap file does not support transparency.

PNG files would be great

They are much smaller than BMP files and support transparency..
