Installing .NET 3.5 SP1 on Windows 8 - IA15

Postby tofutim » Mon Nov 05, 2012 6:24 pm

I've been exchanging emails with Francesco on installing .NET 3.5 SP1 on Windows 8 and thought it might be good to continue on the forum. When you check 3.5 SP1, 3.0, 3.0 SP2 and 2.0 all automatically get checked. But with 3.0 checked, a popup will come up on installation with:

"XXX requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 which is pre-installed with your operating system. Please repair your operating system and try again. XXX Setup cannot continue." (http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... f=2&t=8856)

.NET 3.5, 3.0 and 2.0 are listed as a selectable features, which is perhaps what the dialog means by "pre-installed". This will not be obvious to most users. Per Francesco's advice, I tried unchecking 3.0, 3.0 SP2 and 2.0 and just leaving 3.5 SP1, which allowed the installation to continue from the Web Media Block, but at the end the installer choked asking for a 64-bit version of .NET. It seems like the dism method from Bob T Bunny is the most reasonable (http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... f=2&t=4737) - though I wonder what would happen if the user had no internet access.

What have other folks tried? Is there anyway to get the dism solution as an option in a future version of InstallAware. Thanks all in advance.

GOAL: Install 3.5 SP1 (or 3.5 SP1 x64) into Windows 8 (and 7/Vista/XP) using the same .exe

As an update, I tried choosing the x64 bit version of .NET 3.5 SP1. The new error is

Error 25541. Failed to open XML file C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\web_mediumtrust.config, system error : -2147024786

This is probably what happens if you don't install or activate .NET 2.0/3.0/3.5 before applying SP1. Seems like dism is necessary in any case.

My bad, this error, I believe

"XXX requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 which is pre-installed with your operating system. Please repair your operating system and try again. XXX Setup cannot continue."

may happen when you try to install a 32-bit version of .NET on a 64-bit machine...

---

Update. I had high hopes, as with the change the x64, the download started for 2.0 SP2, but upon installation:

"Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 (x64) could not be installed. Please use Windows Update to manually install this update on your system. XXX cannot continue."

---

Update 2. Per viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8518&start=0 - it might be an issue because 4.x is already installed in Win 8.

As a follow-up, I started a completely new project and installation of .NET SP1 does work on Windows 8, so it must be some scripts from IA14 that are not being replaced, even if you check and uncheck the prereqs. The installation seems to happen without accessing the Web Media Blocks, so I suspect that the Win 8 solution is in fact the dism solution proposed by Bob T Bunny.

For an old project, It appears that you have to physically delete the old scripts from the directory.
