The WMB password is not requested when downloaded

Postby JohnO » Wed Oct 23, 2013 8:13 am

I have studied the help at: http://www.installaware.com/FlashHelp/webmediablock.htm
I thought I understood it well enough to get it to work as I imagined it would. But, I was not challenged to enter a password when the media block had been downloaded.

- I defined a password on the App Requirements page.
- I defined a different password on the 'root' media block
- I saved the project

I did a command-line build using /b=2 for a compressed web-based installer, then deployed the 7zip files to my local web server.
I was challenged when opening the exe, but I wasn't challenged for the media block.

As I had the compression level set to 'none' for build speed, I moved the slider up one level, and rebuilt. This was in case, some degree of compression was required to make the password challenge work. But, a password wasn't requested.

Actually, we don't want a password on the setup.exe as this will be downloaded from a secure site, but we do want passwords on the web media blocks and for the user to be challenged - I assume after download, when they are being unzipped.

What do I have to define to make this work?

Dear John,

This is a misunderstanding - the end-user is not supposed to be prompted for web media block passwords. The actual output 7zip files are password protected; this ensures that users cannot just open 7zip files and extract them to obtain potentially confidential/restricted files that are inside, which they are not licensed to. But the installer automatically extracts them.

If you want to add an interactive password challenge to a particular features or 7zip files, then you can use the new archive management commands, or just prompt for passwords manually in the installer.

Dear Francesco
I get it now. Thanks. Maybe I read the documentation in a way that fitted my expectations.
I guess it might be helpful to update the docs to explicitly state what you have just explained?

It's much better without a challenge for every media block.

John
