Release Notes and other queries...

Postby Seán » Wed Aug 13, 2014 3:12 am

Hi there,

a couple of things...

1) When I open Installaware - I cannot find the "ABOUT Installaware" dialog that I'm used to in so many other products. This would be very useful in checking which version...and other products I have installed.

OH - Found it under Project - How about moving Installaware stuff to it's own tab rather than have it intermingled with project related stuff where it has no relevance. i.e. Project and Installaware. There's plenty of space.

The What's New button only takes you to the same place as the Contents button. The What's New button (or maybe a new button) would be better going to The "Release Notes" (see 3 below)

2) How and when does Installaware update itself? For example I think I've found a new installation on my C:\ProgramData\{guid} directory which looks like Installaware that was deployed 28/05/2014. Only trouble is I didn't know it happened and I ran out of space on my C: drive trying to install another product.

Previously when I originally installed Installaware I had specifically told it all downloads should go to directory I:\Installaware - but this didn't happen and now I have two copies of all the packages on my system - without me knowing about it. Which one is correct?

Can I change the directory without redownloading because I need the space back on C:? Can I also stop Installaware updating itself and choosing to do it myself at my convenience? I would rather choose when I download xMB or yGB.

How do I move the included libraries (will I have to edit the registry)?

3) I also note that the structure of the downloads has changed from everything in one folder to everything now being in a set of folders. As a registered user such a change I would have hoped would be released as a set of Release Notes. I never got any.

Actually for that matter, are there Release Notes made available for any updates to Installaware - OR - the redistributables? This would be very useful, if so where are they?

Actually just found them. Can I ask that you email the Release Notes asking people to opt out rather than opt in...it's much more user friendly and yes I would rather know about every update including all the distributables.

Sorry for all the above but looking to give constructive criticism on usability....

Many thanks and best regards
Seán

Dear Seán,

constructive suggestion or notes ... are always welcome.

1 > We'll take in account your suggestion ... I'll send a note to our Dev Team as well.

2 > InstallAware product uses the scheduled Update mode (Similar to Windows Update) and its settings, depend on user selection.
"Once the IA product has been installed, these setting can be defined on the next logon of the user, setup runs in "update scheduler" mode. This mode allows the end-user to configure a schedule to check for updates online. The user can also elect to not receive updates at all. If the user does choose a schedule, the Windows Task Scheduler is used to create a new task that runs setup in "update" mode at the desired interval".

Honestly and if I haven't missed anything, I found really strange that you have two IA product installed ... even because it is not possible to install concurrent IA versions and in addition, IA product is always distributed as full update ( ... so the new version replaces the one already installed).

3 > IA release notes can be found at: http://www.installaware.com/blog/
I am really sorry, but it is not clear to me to which IA download structure you are referring to.
Maybe, did you use the Web Installer package to install the IA product ( .... and maybe you are referring to the possibility to make a backup copy of the downloaded IA features installed with the Web Installer)?
