Is there any way to write a running log file that doesn't depend upon getting beyond the "Apply Install" command? For the situation where there is a silent install and something goes wrong before the Apply Install, there is no trace on the user's disk.
I tried WriteFile, but that has the same characteristics as a log file.
At what point are files actually copied to the targetdir? sometime after the Apply Install, but when? I need to run several piggyback installs after the files get to some temporary install/app1, install/app2 directories.

You can write to any text file you like using Write to Text File.
You can determine the log file name using the list of pre-defined variables in help.
Read the help topic titled "setup commands preceding apply uninstall" for more information on your Apply Install question.
