Me too, Command Line Crash

Postby gweihs » Mon Jan 30, 2006 1:44 pm

I try running miabuild.exe from the command line and it compiles for about 1 minute and just before its done, it hangs the command prompt window.

The last thing it says is

...
...
Compressed setup files
Finished generating web media blocks
prepared SFX data
Created SFX file
Cleaned up

I hear a short sound (clipped) and thats it, the command prompt never returns and the window becomes unresponsive. When i run it from within the IDE, everything is just fine.

I have tried multiple projects with the same results.

Please help

George

Can you be more specific? Have you confirmed this? Do you think my crashi is related to the earlier issue today? When will a patch be available? An installer without the ability to be integrated into an automated build process (NANT, FinalBuild, etc...) is kinda useless.

This is an urgent matter for me, and I'm sure others.

Please provide a timeframe for a remedy.

As evidenced by other posts in this forum, InstallAware works well when used in automated build environments.

We have had only two reports so far that miabuild hangs after completing the build, but we take all reports seriously and as such the product team will deliver a debug version which should provide more information on the nature of the crash.

This has been escalated to the top - you will hear soon.

Hello Everybody!

I'm joining this thread late!

I was wondering if this might be caused due to starting the build tool in a different startup folder than its own folder, maybe? Just an idea...

Hi,

I use miabuild.exe with VisualMake to create/update 37 setups automatically - couldn't encounter any problems so far. Using this command line:

"E:\\Programme\\InstallAware Studio Admin 5\\miabuild.exe" "$(PrjFileFolder)\\InstallAWARE\\DE\\Freeware\\mdPRODUCT.mpr" /b=2 /r mdPRODUCTVERSION="$(PrjMajorVer).$(PrjMinorVer).$(PrjBuildNumber)"

If it can't be done with InstallAWARE then you are not using Windows

hmmm... i remember having the exact problem George describes but all my attempts at reproducing have been unsucessfull. At the time i assumed it was something to do with the build type but now i don't know. even when i had that problem it was only once over hundreds of builds. i think george should keep trying. i agree with others that it definately is easy to make the command line work. imagine the bad luck to have 3 projects not work ... something is off for sure ...

I have noticed that sometimes one of our automated builds fails, you have to kill the miabuild process and then it carries on with the next one.

We are using Web builds,

One thing to note is that this only ever seems to occur when the build machine is in the locked state, i.e the screen saver has kicked in.

(Building on Windows XP)

Don't know if this will help.

It would be worth a try then to disable screen savers and see if that prevents lockups!

The build process requires a bit of memory for compression and if your screensaver is graphically intensive it might be causing issues.

George, does that help you out here?

Thanks for all the input. I have tried the ideas presented but the problem persists. When miabuild.exe is finished, it seems to hang while attempting to shutdown. I hear the beginning of the sound it normally plays upon conclusion, but it is clipped (gets cut off). I wonder if this is significant. The build appears to have worked properly, the file is in the output folder and seems to be just fine. If I kill the miabuild process using Task Manager, it quickly ends and the script continues.

Hi George

The sound clipping is normal.
How much free virtual memory and total physical memory do you have on the build system?
Does lowering your compression strength help?
Are there any left behind folders in the build directory after exit?

There are no folders/files left behind in the output folder, just the setup.exe. Lowering compression strength has not made any difference. See the attached screen image for other details
